The tiniest steps of movement forward
can make all the difference in life. Research shows that people who are working towards their goals, dreams or passions are happier people. Whether that step is small and simple makes no difference, what matters is taking that step forward, creating movement. This painting is a work in progress. I keep adding to it and changing it, not done with it yet.
We all get stuck and blocked at times but simple forward movement can help. If you are a writer and stuck or blocked, just write anything, everyday. Don’t think about writing the next best seller, or to impress, or to gain many followers, just write for the sake of writing. Write for yourself. Be authentic and true to yourself. If you have nothing to say, write ‘I have nothing to say,’ until something else comes. Julia Cameron, author of The Artists Way, suggests keeping a journal of sorts, what she calls Morning Pages. This is where you spend time, each morning, writing whatever comes to your mind. Cameron believes this process frees you from the stuff in your head that can block you or cause you stress, so you are able to get into creative flow. In this place, called ‘creative flow,’ all great ideas are born, solutions are found, and dreams formulated. Writing these morning pages can help anyone, not just the writers. It takes courage and a certain vulnerability to take steps toward your dreams, to make a mark on that canvas, to sing in front of a crowd, to spend time writing that book, showing up to that meeting completely authentic and true to yourself, even choosing to face a tough relational situation and not avoid, procrastinate and pretend. Brene Browns’ famous quote: “vulnerability is the birthplace of love, joy, belonging, faith, change, innovation, and creativity.” Browns research shows that it is not possible to avoid feeling or experiencing the negative states and still have the positive ones. For example… you can’t have true love without risking hurt, you can’t have creativity without taking the risk of first creating and putting your work out there. Fear is a gremlin that can control our lives, unless we see it, call it what it is, and boldly step forward anyways.
So… I have to ask you, what small step can you take this week to create movement toward what you want? Remember you are the creator of your life.
